Billboard Number One Hits 1980-1989

You can get the feel of a decade from the songs that played on the radio at the time. And, no songs were played more than the #1 hits. These songs were the background music to your life in the 80s – the music in the car on the way to school and sports practice, the music in the stores where you shopped, the music on the soundtracks of your favorite movies, and the music you danced alone to in your bedroom. By looking at the number one hits in consecutive order throughout the 80s, you get an immediate sense of how music and culture evolved over those 10 years. We link to music videos where they available. Enjoy!Billboard

  1. Jack and Diane is possibly the worst song ever sung or written by that Springsteen Wannabe Mellenhead! Not even close to being an 80’s song

    • 80s was/is the worst music ever– anything before or after but Most of those songs are so lame. Ir your an 80s child/teen and grew up with it, then I guess you gotta love it, as it’s in your head/heart/and mind.

    • Says you No, it’s not my favorite song, but, it’s alright. What I object to is the insulting of John Cougar and the pretending he was trying to be like Bruce Springsteen. He had a long career of his own before MTV “discovered” him, He has always been an indiviual, who does his own thing.

His music doesn’t sound like Springsteen, anymore than Stevie Wonder’s and Michael Jacksons’s sound alike.

You are only saying he wants to be like Springsteen because they are both very definitely white, non-country, not quite rock a billy, but, definitely rock ‘n’ roll music that isn’t heavy metal or otherwise definable except that it is definitely American.

Get over it! They both have their own style. If you don’t like Mr. Mellencamp, feel free to avoid him. No need to be rude. It’s not like he’s out there making insulting posts about you.

  2. New wave music really killed disco hard… unfortunately… grunge really stuck it to new wave in the 90’s… I just wish rap would go away.. ridiculous how long its been around. Love the 80s!!

    • Disco really killed disco! Haha jk but rap is pretty good sometimes…. You just have to listen to the right kind and rapture by Blondie is one of the first rap songs ever made besides sugarhill gangs rappers delight

      Post a Reply
      • dude Blondie doesn’t rap and the one time she did try it failed miserably. Blondie did not create one of the first “rap” songs not even by a long shot. rap had been around for for almost 10 years before Blondie tried and failed at it. Also if you want good rap try Juicy by Notorious BIG or lose yourself by Eminem.

  3. The list for 1985 is packed with awesome tunes from that year – each one brings back great memories of my high school years. Another song from that year that had an impact on me was Paul Hardcastles “19”. The song resonates with me since my dad served in Vietnam. I liked it but, not for the same reasons that I liked the other songs on the list. It was thought provoking in that the songs main theme was something that direclty affected our family.

    • The 80s was a wonderful decade for the music and 1985, in my opnion, was the best year: “Take On Me” (A-Ha), “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” (Simple Minds), “Money For Nothing” (Dire Straits), “Broken Wings” (Mr Mister), “Into The Groove” (Madonna)… and much more songs!!

  9. Since the end of the 80s pop music and rock music has really gone down in quality. Look at what we have on the radio nowadays, mostly total garbage. Technology might continue to improve with time but the same can’t be said about music, unfortunately. If I had a time machine I would go back to 1980 and start all over again. Anyone have a DeLorean? :-)

Everyone was in a good mood and happy with not a care in the world, except to have fun. I think my memories of the 80’s help me keep my sanity today. If I could go back in time it would be during that era. Keep the memories going! Love the website!

  20. Having grown up with the music of the 50’s and 60’s, I never thought there would be another “banner” decade of music like we had then. WRONG! As a DJ from 1983 – 1985, I was sadly mistaken that I had seen the best come and go. Now, don’t get me wrong; my love for “my” decade is still number one, but having the privilege of playing these songs on the air, many for the first time in the coverage area, was by far the best musical experience in the world.
I am putting together a new exercise playlist for my MP3 player and came here to get the top hits from back then. Thanks for having this nicely formatted list. Makes it easier to find stuff in my library.
