80s-set Netflix Biopic Explores 80s Rapper Roxanne Shanté’s Life
“A Sundance favourite, Roxanne Roxanne follows the turbulent life of the 14-year-old Queens battle MC, set in the early 1980s. Shanté made a name for herself as part of the Juice Crew collective, breaking through with her one-take freestyle response to a derogatory UTFO single dubbed ‘Roxanne Roxanne,'” according to Mashable.
The struggle as a female MC in New York in the 80s is bound to be an interesting story, particularly with Shanté, who is not often mentioned when it comes to the best female rappers debate. Though, with this film, it could cause folks to take a little trip back down memory lane and celebrate a truly great artist from the 80s.
“Starring Mahershala Ali, Nia Long, Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz) and introducing Chanté Adams, the film will land on Netflix March 23. Pharrell Williams, Mimi Valdes, and Forest Whitaker all co-produced, so expect one heck of a soundtrack.”
Netflix is known for featuring some pretty neat shows and films. With the Sundance buzz already high, we expect this to be very 80s and very awesome. Will you be checking out Roxanne Roxanne? Let us know in the comments section below.
