Unlike the actual puzzle, this costume is the essence of simplicity. I owned several Rubik’s cubes in the 80s, and now my son owns one, and neither of us has made any headway on solving the thing. Oh well. Happily, that skill is not required to create this great 80s-inspired costume. What you need is a little DIY ambition and some basic supplies.
Needed supplies:
- Square cardboard box
- Black duct tape
- Poster board in red, blue, green, yellow, white and orange
- Glue
Here’s the How To:
- Use black duct tape to make a grid on your square box (for the black plastic that showed through on the real rubik’s cube, kind of like a tic-tac-toe sign, but also the corner edges);
- Cut out colored squares from poster board (and round the corners);
- Glue them on;
- Cut the bottom and two sides of the center squares on the left and right sides making flaps for the arms to come out of. Wrap the edges with duct tape;
- Cut the front edge and two sides of the center square on the top for the head to stick out of. Wrap the edges with duct tape;
- Draw the rubik’s logo on the front center square.
The size of the color blocks that you’ll cut out of the poster board will depend on the size of your box. Use a regular piece of paper and test sizes so that you have a size that allows for 3 across with space in between and down the sides (that space is where the black duct tape shows through). You can certainly organize your color blocks so that your cube is solved. But, we prefer the more realistic approach which shows the cube in its perpetual state (at our house anyway) – mixed up completely. Simply don all black and pop on your cube, and your costume puzzle is solved! If, however, the thought of making it yourself is a non-starter, there are some neat options for just buying a costume.
