If I could have emulated one movie characters style while I was in high school it totally would have been Molly Ringwald’s Andie from one of my favorite 80’s flicks, Pretty in Pink.
Andie may have been cash poor but what she lacked in funds she made up for with her cool creativity and granny-chic style.
No cookie cutter mall outfits for this girl. While the mean rich girls were shopping at Contempo Casuals, Andie was busy at the thrift stores and the sewing machine, putting together romantic new wave-y, heavily accessorized original creations.
Think lots of pearls, paisley, drapey-flowey fabrics, cameo pins, scarves and hats, vintage cardigans, vintage dresses and little round glasses.
I could not have pulled off this look to save my life. But I kinda tried. And I kinda failed.
Andie Walsh Costume Elements:
Here is what you’ll need to truly be pretty in pink on Halloween night:
- Long skirt in light pink, cream or floral
- Vest – crocheted or lace are ideal
- Button down shirt with giant jeweled pin at the top
- Pearls, plastic stacked bracelets
- One giant dangle earring and one mismatched small earring
- Round granny glasses
- Bowler hat with flowery scarf tied around the brim
- Socks with a garish 80’s floral pattern
- Lace up ankle boots
If you have strawberry-red hair that’s the icing on the pink cake. If not a little red bobbed wig could work, or just tuck your hair up into that hat.
And if you are my hero, you will sit down at a sewing machine and make yourself the Andie-Prom-Dress while playing New Order in the background. Then you will go to your Halloween party, but before you leave you will declare, “I just want to show them that they didn’t break me.”
And if you can nab yourself a Duckie for a date you are my ultimate hero.
